View from the Pew: Technology, 'Voodoo' and Church Giving

Posted by Sally Grantham Oct 20, 2015 10:30:00 AM

This week we welcome back Sally Grantham from partner ACS Technologies to the Vanco blog. Sally shares a light moment with her father that illustrates how technology has become such an integral part of our lives.

blog102015Recently, while I was visiting with my dad, he asked me, “Do you have voodoo?”

This was a surprising question from my dad. I told him no, I was doing good in my faith. I continue to grow, continue to worship as I have in the past.

He shook his head and said, “No, I mean the movie streaming service.”  He meant Vudu!

We had a good laugh. Instead of questioning my religious focus, he was just checking on my smart TV status. Apparently my TV is dumb, which I didn’t realize. My children look forward to movie night on Saturday, when we watch a movie and eat popcorn at home. Apparently if my TV (and I) got smart, we could have a variety of movie resources at our fingertips. Plus, it would keep me from running in and out of the grocery store to return those rented titles.

Technology seems to continue to grow in every aspect of our lives. Faster than we can sometimes keep up with! So many times it does make things much more convenient. We just have to know of the availability. Also, sometimes we have to get the timing right in our lives to utilize the technology.

Technology is truly making the act of the gift and the management of the gift simpler.

This holds true for churches and their members. New technology surrounds us. This technology is truly making the act of the gift and the management of the gift simpler. This past Sunday, as the giving basket was being passed at church, the lady next to me pulled out her phone to make a mobile gift. I saw her use technology to participate in giving on the spot.

As church members, we have to have to be open to change. With an open mind, a whole new world of giving options becomes available that helps us to keep our intentions. Churches that also keep their minds open to new possibilities with giving will discover new avenues to help support their mission.

Our hands-on guide shows how electronic giving can help your church and make life easier for your church administrators.
