Sing Your Pastor’s Praises, In October and Throughout the Year

pastorPastors will tell you that their job is sometimes taxing and oftentimes filled with stress. That’s why it’s important that congregations set aside time to honor their pastors and church staffs for their hard work.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month, a special time for churches to honor their clergy and staff, but it’s important to remember that appreciation and support from the congregation and church community is appropriate anytime.

About 46,500 people serve as clergy in the United States, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, with thousands more in supporting roles. The celebration of Pastor Appreciation Month was established in 1992 with a mission to uplift and encourage pastors, missionaries and religious workers.

Pastors live under continual pressure. People come to pastors for comfort, but they often have no one to go to when they need similar help. The good news is that we can make a difference by giving them the positive affirmation they need, in October and throughout the year.

And if your pastor has a family, don’t forget that they also feel the pressures of life in the ministry. They’re expected to be perfect people in perfect families, and to be available whenever they’re needed. They could use an affirmative lift too.

Every church can’t afford to give their pastor a tropical vacation, but your pastor, church staff and their families deserve some kind of recognition that tells them how much you appreciate them. A gift card to a favorite restaurant or a gift that fits with a hobby are just two examples of appropriate expressions of your gratitude — even a card or a simple “Thank you” are nice gestures and will mean more to your pastor than the dollar value of a gift.

Our friends at ACS Technologies have posted ways churches can celebrate pastors in October on their blog, and there are lots more available online. Find one that’s appropriate for you and for your church’s congregation, and let your pastor know how much he means to your community.
